Nobody knows how Kai the Golden Retriever’s weight blew up to almost 175 pounds, but his previous owners saw it as an excuse to bring him to an animal clinic and have him euthanized. Good thing the vet knew better and saw how much love Kai has to give in this world.
The veterinarian surrendered Kai to a shelter instead. Misfits of Alberta, an animal rescue center in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada happily took Kai in, and they made sure that he gets a family that will truly love him for who he is.
When Pam Heggie first saw Kai, she was surprised–like everyone else. But she didn’t see it as a reason not to adopt this ball of fluff. Pam is a nurse who used to work in cardiac rehab, so she knew the time and effort she needs to put in to help out her new buddy.
However, the first few weeks with Kai were far from easy. The poor pup had trouble walking, and on his first day with Pam, it took him twenty minutes to get up the three steps into their house. “I just looked at him, devastated. I was crying, but I was determined to help him,” Pam said.
With the help of their vet, Pam set up a strict diet and fitness plan to reach their goal of losing 100 pounds. Aside from walking three times a day, Kai goes through regular physiotherapy and swimming sessions on the side. Though the pup is doing a great job at it, he wasn’t given any treats as part of his diet.
Pam saw how determined Kai was. After a year of hard work, the pup finally lost 100 pounds and is now looking great! The change was remarkable–the dog who once had trouble walking up the stairs can now catch up with other dogs in the park.
Kai now loves playing fetch, running through obstacles, and sometimes, chasing frogs in the pond. He can now lick his back legs, which he couldn’t do before.
We all need to learn a lesson or two from Kai–to never give up on life when (almost) everyone has given up on you. You go, Kai. We are proud of you! And many thanks to Pam for loving him through thick and thin, literally!
